Mission & Vision
Our mission is to protect the bluff and coastal forests of the Cayman Islands and secure permanent public access rights to recreational areas. We are doing this by creating nature parks that protect the beautiful and unique natural habitats of Cayman. We envision an island of nature and humanity living in harmony with a deep connection to our natural heritage.
Conservation
The Brac has a deep variety of plants and animals including endemic species found nowhere else in the world. Unfortunately, Cayman Brac is the least protected of the Cayman Islands. With only 6% of land protected, this unique flora and fauna is in danger of extinction.
This project helps protect them while they are “now here” before over-clearing means they are “no-where”.
Recreational Access
The bluff and surrounding coasts host an incredible wealth of nature and recreational opportunities. We want to ensure that all future generations can access natural areas, especially the bluff. Although the bluff face is crown-owned, there is no designated public access to it. CBRAC is changing that. Our protected areas serve as access points for climbing, caving, hiking, bat-watching, birdwatching, and nature meditation.
We are taking the idea of beach access a step further. Beach lovers now have to squeeze between buildings to access many beaches in the Cayman Islands. We are creating nature corridors so you can access the bluff and coast via pristine forests rather than pavement.
Balance
In all of our projects, the twin goals of ecological conservation and recreational access are delicately balanced. We always strive to maintain land in its natural state, but some modification is necessary to ensure safe recreational enjoyment.
Modification of the land will be limited to improving accessibility and safety for these areas. Examples of this limited development include maintaining trails, primitive picnic areas and simple platforms in natural clearings. The natural lay of the land should ultimately dictate use, and all trails and recreational areas will be maintained with the lowest environmental impact possible.
Education
We’re on a mission to nurture our community’s connection with the outdoors. Ecological education is at the core of this mission. CBRAC protects beautiful spaces so we can be at peace and learn from the greatest teacher: nature. We also facilitate educational events and tools that help share the love for this beautiful island.
Ecological Research
Our work encourages and supports the development of ecological research in the local flora and fauna of Cayman Brac by providing access to wild, natural spaces and building relationships with other education, research, and conservation organizations.
